Nature is my religion; the quiet woods
are its parish churches and the rugged mountains are its cathedrals. In
nature I find spiritual guidance, serenity, and a home for my soul. The
call of the wild is so strong in me that I surrendered a lucrative career
in physics for the siren song of the outdoors. The wild places, for me,
are the surest tonic against the tensions of everyday life: they are the
only places where I feel totally vibrant, alive, and truly myself. If I
can share this gift of uplifting spirituality with others through my photography,
if I can convey some sense of nature's healing power that I experience,
then I feel I've earned my keep in this world.
I have been selling my fine art prints
professionally since 1990. I shoot both in color and in black and white,
and I use camera formats from 35 mm to 4" x 5" large format. I
combine my technical background with an intuitive eye to produce outstanding
images, following John Sexton's dictum, "strive for perfection, settle
for excellence."

Technical notes:
I shoot with a flatbed 4 x 5 view camera whenever I can, including on
some backpacking trips. Often I opt instead for the lighter and more flexible
35 mm Nikon system. On occasion I use medium format cameras as well. My
black and white film of choice is Tmax 100. I process my black and white
prints completely archivally (fiber-based paper, two bath fix, hypo clearing,
long washes, and selenium toning). My color film of choice is Fujichrome
Velvia 100F slide film. I mat and frame my images myself to gallery standards
using only acid-free archival materials.
Experience:
I have been photographing since 1985 and I have been shooting professionally
since 1990. I am sole proprietor of my business, Leaning Toward Light Photography.
I am an award-winning teacher who enjoys running photography seminars and
instructing at institutions. My nature photography has appeared in national
publications, calendars, textbook covers, and greeting cards.
