I have never seen so many Virginia bluebells in my life as I did in Backbone State Park in Iowa. They were in a flat valley below a tall outcropping (the eponymous "backbone"), and viewed from above I could really tell where the drainage ran in the valley, for the bluebells formed a sinuous river of solid color following the moisture. I tried shooting from above to capture the overall scene, but I found the best images came when I got down close among them. I had just framed this more intimate view when the sun came out from behind a mostly overcast sky. Photographically speaking direct sun is death to gentle flowers like these, so I enjoyed a meditative 20 minutes sitting and listening to the silence until the sun disappeared again. |
