Moonrise over Mono Lake and Negit Island

(order ID # CT35-03114-A)

Mono Lake, just east of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada eastern scarp, is the most otherworldly place I know. I feel like I'm in a science fiction story when I'm there experiencing its unique ecosystem, alkaline dust, and tufa towers. I return every chance I get. On this visit, I knew it was the night of the full moon and I knew where it would be rising, so I went to Black Point, a promontory over the lake and my favorite overlook, to await the moon's rise over brooding Negit Island. Nature didn't disappoint, and I captured this scene. The original photograph had a large expanse of empty sky that wasn't adding to the image, so I cropped it out to make a panoramic.
