Comet Hyakutake

(order ID # CN35-00001-26A)

This bright comet caught a lot of public attention, but it had the misfortune of coming just a year before the even brighter Comet Hale-Bopp. More people could see Hale-Bopp from light-polluted urban sites so it is the comet most people remember, but Hyakutake had a longer tail and to my eyes was the more attractive of the two.

But perhaps I'm biased, for this comet has special significance for me. My girlfriend Ann and I drove west into Virginia to get to a dark sky for a night of comet watching and photographing. As the sun rose at dawn, I asked her to marry me. She said "yes," and we were wed later that year. Some couples have "their song"; we have "our comet."
