Burn Scar near Mono Lake

(order ID # CT35-00514)

The area around Mono Lake, just east of the Sierra Nevada crest and Yosemite National Park, is a bizarre landscape that feels almost like an alien planet. Sculpted by volcanic action and blanketed by soft alkaline dust, it is a harsh environment indeed. But this one spot was made unnecessarily barren when some fool threw away a lit cigarette butt and burned 40 acres of scrub. The fire occurred 8 years prior to the time of this picture. In that time virtually no recovery had been made. Even now, 11 years later still, only a few tufts of green show life slowly returning to this burn scar. As much as I like this image, I'd rather the land had not been abused in the first place.
