Bristlecone Pine Snag

(order ID # CT35-01748-A)

Bristlecone Pines, confined to a small range in the White Mountains in California, are the world's oldest living entities. The oldest on record, dubbed the Methuselah Tree, is 4,766 years old. Think of it -- it was almost three millennia old at the time of Christ ... it was 2,000 years old as Homer told his stories ... 1,600 during the Age of Heros and the Trojan War ... and it was probably alive when the big stones were erected at Stonehenge. Remarkable. I am in awe of these trees, but visually they are twisted, gnarled, gnomes of trees, almost unremarkable and faintly comic. I was most attracted photographically by details of their texture and tortuous forms, the above image being my favorite.
