Alabama Hills, California, Rock Formation

(order ID# BW45-00001)

In the shadow of Mt. Whitney in California's Sierra Nevada lies an unusual geological feature known as the Alabama Hills. These hills are composed of voluptuous rocks in endless twists and folds, a fascinating abstract at every turn. I am far from the first photographer to lose my heart -- and several days -- exploring the region.

As an aside, the Alabama Hills are known for more than their intrinsic beauty. Many a Hollywood movie has been filmed there in terrain that the filmmakers view as the quintessential American West. The Hills can represent more than just cowboy country, though: I once saw a movie with John Wayne playing a miner in South America...and all the while there was Mt. Whitney, clear as day, in the background!
