
| The area around Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the United States outside of Alaska, is rather arid. But there's the occasional black cottonwood at lower elevations to be found. I was rock scrambling to the east of Mt. Whitney when I found this juxtaposition of lush cottonwood and austere peak. I climbed atop the tallest boulder I could find to place Whitney above the tree. The blue cast of the mountain shows that it is far away in the distance, accentuating the sense of depth in this image. |
